Giovanni, 1490: The Wool Worker

Giovanni, a labourer in Florence’s vast textile industry, has his own angle on the Renaissance city. As he walks you through a day in his life, he airs his views on everything from city politics and public sculpture to the taverns he plays dice in, and on everyone from Lorenzo the Magnificent to the apothecary on the streetcorner.

In the city centre, where Giovanni works, he shows you Florence’s markets and hidden alleyways, and gives you his take on Medici power at the city’s most famous sites. You can also take Giovanni’s ‘Neighbourhood World’ walk and explore his home turf of Sant’Ambrogio, with its carnival brigades, religious fraternities, and streetcorner Madonnas.
